Ellis Bookcase:    $42,000.00
AUCTION HOUSE: SOTHEBY'S
MAKER: GUSTAV

Less boxy than other famous Stickley bookcases, this model was unsurprisingly the product of Stickley’s legendary designer Harvey Ellis. Two of Ellis’s hallmarks, the arched apron and the overhanging top, are in play here. But the essence of this bookcase is in its double doors. On each, Ellis eschewed Stickley’s conventional mullioned, paned door with a single cross oak mullion. The top panes are quartered into leaded glass and the bottom panes extend visually across the shelves. The lines of this case are exceptionally clean and the proportions balanced. Stickley continues to produce the model in both quartersawn white oak and in cherry . It provides homes with a substantial, elemental and elegant showcase.
